Get Out of Your Head and Calm Your Nervous System

Here’s a way to get out of your head and calm your nervous system.

Rhythmic fist tapping is a great way to reconnect with your body and shift out of overthinking. If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or trapped in a cycle of negative thoughts, this technique can be very helpful.

The steady rhythm of tapping creates a sense of predictability and safety. This predictable rhythm offers your brain a feeling of security, making it easier to realign and manage stress responses effectively.

Here’s how to use it:

➡️When you notice stress, anxiety, or physical sensations like tension, a racing heart, or tingling, acknowledge that you’re in a stress cycle.

➡️Stand up and take a deep, calming breath.

➡️Affirm to yourself, “I am ready to reset and find calm.”

➡️Perform rhythmic hand tapping for 3 to 5 minutes, alternating hands as you go.

Pay attention to any shifts in your thoughts and how your body feels. You might find yourself sighing or yawning—these are signs your nervous system is finding its balance. This simple practice can help you regain a sense of calm and safety.

Other soothing movements to try include swaying, rocking, bouncing, or shaking. These actions can activate your parasympathetic nervous system, promoting a restful state.
